Listening and Questioning

Mentoring primarily involves listening to what the other person is saying to pick out what they are most concerned about. Getting them to open up to you takes time and empathy.  Expressing empathy is saying "Hmmm, interesting, tell me more about that."  then the next time you talk to them, you pick up right where you left off by asking them about what seemed to be an emotional trigger for them in the prior meeting.  Maybe their mother or school or work or some thing else but it will probably always come down to a problem with relationships.  Listening to another person's issues is one of the most valuable things a mentor can do.
